1135: Hippie Food

Jonathan Kauffman, Author, Hippie Food: How Back to the Landers, Longhairs, and Revolutionaries Changed the Way We Eat

How did hippies change the way we eat?

They were children of the greatest generation. But frustrated with fighting their own war in Viet Nam, they turned on, tuned in, dropped out and changed the way Americans eat. And that leads us to ask…

How did Hippies change the way we eat?

It was, by any measure, a time of out with the old and in with the new.

In agriculture– which is the foundation of all culture– it meant to hell with the ways of industiral agriculture and all its chemical poisons and big money… And in with… well, in with what?

The Ecological Farming Association, which is as we speak holding its 38th annual EcoFarm conference in Asilomar, is a good example the searching that has taken place for that, “Well, what’s next?”

Way back in its beginnings, EcoFarm was held at La Honda, a small village in the hills above San Francisco made famous by Ken Kesey and his band of hippie hooligan friends.

To feed the conference attendees, organizers relied on the beans and veggies grown by the attending organic farmers…. And as a consequence, the break out sessions closely resembled the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles.

This weekend’s EcoFarm Conference is also featuring the produce of its attending farmers… But the food is now of such a quality that the lunches are always sold out…

All that searching, by hippies, for a new way to eat leads us to ask…

How did Hippies change the way we eat?
