1086: End of Bio-Fuel Subsidies?

Don Scott, Director of Sustainability
National Biodiesel Board

Should government subsidize plant-based fuels?

When oil hit sixty dollars a barrel, the federal government established a Renewable Fuel Standard to support plant-based alternative fuels.

The federal government has since subsidized biofuels with tax credits and price supports, and when oil hit a hundred and forty seven dollars a barrel, the renewable fuels industry boomed.

But then came the Bakken and Permian basins, and a glut of oil that sent prices plunging. The biofuel tax credits have now expired and their renewal is pending before a new president a new congress.

And that leads us to ask...

Should government subsidize plant-based fuels?
