It’s pure, and natural, and squeezed fresh. And so we buy the orange juice and drink it to break our fast and start our day. Still, we wonder…

How did orange juice become a staple of our breakfast? How is it possible to get the juice out of an orange from a tree in Brazil and into a glass on a table in Peoria? And how do they get away with selling us year-old juice as Squeezed Fresh?

As a staple of the American diet, orange juice is emblematic of the industrialization of our food chain. Once the product of our Florida farmers, most orange juice now comes to us from Brazil under the labels of the Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola companies.

By looking into how this juice is served up to us, we can see how we have become increasingly more dependent on a few, very large businesses to feed us. This dependency leads us to ask…
